What is emotive family photography? That was just the question this mom asked during the process of booking her family’s portrait session.  It’s a great question!   There are lots of different styles of portrait photography, and I like to describe my style as emotive.  Yes, we go to a beautiful spot.  Yes, I know how to work with light and how to pose people in a way that flatters them.  But the real heart (ha, pun not intended, or maybe it was?) of my portraits is emotion — both the emotions expressed by the people who are being photographed, as well as the emotions they evoke in those people and others when they are viewed after the fact (when the gallery is delivered; 10 years down the line when the kids are heading off to college; 30 years down the line when the kids in these portraits are showing them to their own children).  It’s why I value the experience so much for my clients — I want them to feel good while they are being photographed, and be able to remember those happy moments when they look back at the images later on.  Do we still get the “everyone looking and smiling” shot? Of course!  But it’s kind of an in-between shot — most of the images in the gallery are all about movement and prompting emotional responses that help the session flow — once everyone is comfortable, we snag that everyone looking shot, and it’s a better shot for coming after everyone has had a chance to relax into the session.
