What a joy to photograph these folks — they wanted updated family portraits and hadn’t had professional photos taken since their oldest was six months old, about two years ago.  Now their newest little one had hit that milestone and it seemed like the right time for a refresh 🙂

Due to Covid-19, I have been careful to schedule portrait sessions that will be at parks at times that are less likely to be crowded — in addition to me keeping my distance and wearing a mask, this is part of how I’m working to protect my clients’ health.  The tricky part is, of course, matching that up with times there will be good light AND times the children involved will be happy (there is no point in scheduling a portrait session at bedtime or naptime with small children — scheduling at a time they will be happy is my main concern, since I want each family’s portrait session to be a good experience, in addition to providing them with lasting memories in the form of photographs).

For this family, the perfect time in many ways seemed to come not quite at the kids’ bedtime, but not far before.  One of the reasons I love standard-length portrait sessions rather than mini-sessions is that for a kid who needs some time to warm up, there is time to do that — time for them to get comfortable with this stranger with a giant camera (lots of little kids assume a cell phone when you mention a camera, so a professional camera can be a bit intimidating!).  Time to play games (this little guy wanted to play “go fast”).  Time to explore.  And once the kids had warmed up, these two little ones had smiles that lit up not just a room but an entire park — and looking at their mom and dad, I could see where they came from 🙂  Here are a few of my favorites from our time together:
