What do you want to remember about when your child was small?  The giggles?  The snuggles?  Their sense of wonder?  I love capturing all of that, and I do it by having child-led, or child-friendly portrait sessions.  What does that mean, though?  It means that, ultimately, your child or children call the shots during your portrait session.  I prepare ahead of time with some fun games and prompts that I think a child the age of yours will enjoy, but ultimately, I follow your child’s lead.

In this session this past weekend, we met at sunrise because that’s when this little girl is happiest.  We did some of the standard “everyone looking” shots before we lost that just-woke-up happy mood, and then we followed her lead!  She was absolutely fascinated with the sticks on the ground (there were a LOT of sticks from a recent wind storm), and as a toddler, all she wanted to do was walk and climb.  So I channeled what she naturally wanted with some prompts to help keep her in as good light as possible and engaged with me (and by extension, the camera).  I say this as both a professional who has been in the portrait photography business for 6 years as well as a mom of three kids myself — an 18 month old is not a child you can reason with — they have newfound freedom of movement and they are going to use it, so you basically have two choices — you can work with them, or work against them by having set ideas of what your session is going to look like.  Sometimes it’s a little hard for parents to relax into a child-led session, but these folks were fantastic with going with the flow.  Here are a few of my favorites from our time together:
